Lead-based paint was sold for homes until 1978, and a lot of Dallas was built before then. Under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, a firm paid to disturb painted surfaces in a house that old has to be certified and work lead-safe. KD Installations & Remodeling, LLC is on the EPA's register of certified firms.

  • Contained. The rule requires the work area to be sealed off with plastic sheeting and posted before painted surfaces are disturbed.
  • No dust-throwing shortcuts. Open-flame burning of paint and power sanding without a HEPA-attached shroud are prohibited methods.
  • Cleaned and checked. HEPA vacuuming and wet wiping, then a cleaning verification before the room is reopened.

Before anything is ordered, the room gets measured as it really stands: the wall that is not quite square, the floor that dips toward the back door, the outlet that sits where a cabinet wants to go. Those numbers, not the catalog sizes, decide what fits.

Seal off the rest of the house

Plastic sheeting goes up across the doorway and paper goes down on the floors before demolition. In a Dallas house built before 1978, that containment is not a courtesy: it is what the EPA's lead-safe rule asks of a certified firm like KD.

Cabinet boxes, casework and framing go in level and plumb first. Doors, drawer fronts and trim come last, once everything behind them is true, because a crooked box shows up later as a door that will not stay closed.
